Local attorney, former statesman dies at 70

AMERICUS — Well-known local attorney and former statesman, William J. Murray, died Saturday at his home. He was 70.
A native of Sumter County, Murray graduated from the University of Georgia in 1968, where he was involved in various collegiate activities, early demonstrating his leadership abilities.
In 1971, he receive his juris doctorate from the University of Georgia Joseph Henry Lumpkin School of Law, where he further distinguished himself.
He served in the Americus City Council from 1975-77, and was elected to the Georgia House of Representatives  where he served from 1977-1981.
He later founded the Sumter Free Press.
