PLAINS — Jimmy Carter National Historic Site hosts Arts in Archery from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Jimmy Carter Boyhood Farm. Formerly known as Cane Syrup Day, Arts in Archery will have additional demonstrators than years past. Cultural demonstrations will include wood crafts, blacksmithing, glass blowing, broom making, quilting, basketry, and other traditional arts and crafts. Items crafted by demonstrators will be available to purchase. Antique railroad inspection cars and tractors will be on display during the event.
The centerpiece of the event is the cane syrup demonstration where visitors can see first-hand the process of turning stalks of sugar into the once Southern staple. The syrup is made much the same way it was produced during Jimmy Carter’s youth, using a mule-powered cane mill and a wood-fired cooker.
Admission to the event is free and open to the public. Food and drinks will also be available onsite for purchase. The Jimmy Carter Boyhood Farm is located off Old Plains Highway, west of downtown Plains. For more information call the visitor center at (229) 824-4104.
