AMERICUS — Bethany Comeau recently opened a new counseling private practice in Americus. Comeau is a Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of Georgia, and was licensed in the state of Texas prior to relocating to Americus in 2013. She has been providing counseling, education, and support to adults, children, and families since 2005. Her experience includes providing counseling in private practice, community mental health clinics, a grief support center for children, an adoption agency, and in primary school settings. She has also taught theories and practices of counseling as an adjunct instructor at Georgia Southwestern State University.
According to Comeau, it’s all about helping clients bring about change.
“When I first began my career as a counselor, a wise therapist named Joseph Feldman gave me an important piece of advice,” she said. “He said ‘You need to give people hope, and a new tool’ and that’s what I focus on with my clients – empowering them to find hope in their situation, and giving them a new tool to foster positive change.”
Comeau went on to articulate a commitment to serving diverse client populations.
“Over the years, I have worked with clients from a wide range of backgrounds,” she said. “It is very important to me that my clients feel affirmed in their identity. My goal to make every client feel welcomed and valued.”
Comeau is a provider with Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Cigna, some local employee assistance programs, and she is currently accepting new clients. In addition to counseling adults, she works with adolescents and children, ages 10 and up. She is certified in TBRI® (Trust-Based Relational Intervention), a therapeutic attachment model that trains parents and caregivers in effective support and treatment for at-risk children.
