AMERICUS — Dr. George Washington Bagley IV, beloved and prominent dentist, died Dec. 9, 2016, at Phoebe Sumter Medical Center, after a brief battle with pancreatic cancer. A fifth-generation Sumter Countian, Dr. Bagley was born on June 21, 1951, to the late Dr. George Washington Bagley III and Mary Barta Bagley of Americus, Ga.

A devoted member of St John’s Church, where he served as a lay reader, George’s accomplishments are numerous and diverse. After graduating with honors from Americus High School, where he was on the golf team winning two state championships, he attended the University of Georgia and Georgia Southwestern College obtaining a bachelor’s of science in chemistry. He was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity. He then furthered his education enrolling in the Medical College of Georgia School of Dentistry in Augusta, Ga. George returned home in 1976, to practice with his father who began his dental practice in Americus after the war in 1945. This was his 40th year of serving the dental needs of his hometown.

George was active in his community serving on numerous boards, including chairman of the Board of Trustees at Southland Academy and a Foundation board member at Georgia Southwestern State University.

An avid golfer, George was a two-time Club Champion at the Americus Country Club. Before attending dental school, he was an assistant golf pro at the Georgia Warm Springs Foundation.

After moving to Leslie, Ga., in 2000, where George had spent much of his childhood with his grandmother and grandfather, Dr. George W Bagley Jr., he served the City of Leslie as a four-term mayor.

An enthusiastic outdoorsman, most of George’s leisure time was spent on his family farm developing wildlife habitats for deer and quail. Quail season was the most special time of the year for him. It was a relished opportunity for him to be outside with family and friends, working and training his prized bird dogs as they hunted the farm for those elusive bobwhite quail. The rest of the year was dedicated to tending the farm on his tractor, planting cover and providing food for the wildlife, feeding the fish in his ponds, and simply riding around in “Beep” with his beloved English Cocker, GG, admiring God’s handiwork.

George is survived by his wife Bobbie S. Bagley of Leslie; a son George W. Bagley V of Atlanta, and a daughter, Mimi Jennings and husband Phil of Soperton, Ga.; a sister, Lisa Bagley Worden of Bucks County, Pennsylvania; a niece, a nephew, and a kennel full of adoring bird dogs.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 13, 2016, at St. John’s Church, Southland Road, Americus, Ga. A luncheon will be held immediately following the service at the Lee Council House in Americus where the family will receive friends.

The family requests that memorials be made to St. John’s Church Southland Road, Americus GA 31709 or Phoebe Sumter Hospice, P.O. Box 1434 Americus GA 31709.
