AMERICUS — Nicholas “Nick” Ryan Smarr, age 25, of Americus, died Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2016, at Phoebe Sumter Medical Center. A native of Americus, he was born April 5, 1991, the son of Danny Lee Smarr and Janice Waters Smarr. Mr. Smarr was a corrections officer in Telfair County and attended and graduated from the Police Academy in Forsyth. He was formerly a police officer in McRae, a deputy with the  sSumter County Sherriff’s Office, a police officer in Vienna and was currently with the Americus Police Department. He loved watching movies, the Falcons and enjoyed all outdoor activities and being with his friends.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 11, 2016, at the Georgia Southwestern State University Storm Dome with Pastor Ricky Smarr and Chief Mark Scott officiating. Pallbearers include the Police Honor Guard. Burial will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery. The family suggests in lieu of flowers that donations be made to the Nick Smarr Trust Fund at Sumter Bank &Trust.

Survivors include his mother, Janice Smarr of Americus; his father and stepmother, Danny and Sherry Smarr of Americus; his loving girlfriend, Rachel Harrod of Americus; a paternal grandmother, Ruth Wilson of Americus; two sisters, Chesley Smarr of Americus and Tiffany Smarr of Americus; a brother, Cameron Smarr of Americus; numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins; and some special friends, Josh Roberts, Matt McKinzie, Tyler Daniel, Matt Wilson, Jordan Resnick, William Tatum, Nick Pitts, Chris Gaddy, Doc Belflowers, Sam Young, Jett Coptsias, and Jody Smith. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Linda Waters.
