AMERICUS — Dr. George Washington Bagley IV, prominent dentist and mayor of Leslie, died Friday at Phoebe Sumter Medical Center. He had recently been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.
Bagley, 65, was well known by so many loyal patients and friends as someone who always had a smile and bright word of greeting. His sense of humor was contagious.
An honor graduate of Americus High School, he was on the golf team winning two state championships. He later attended the University of Georgia and Georgia Southwestern College, earning a bachelor’s of science in chemistry, and was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity. He received his DDM from Medical College of Georgia School of Dentistry in Augusta. Returning home in 1976, he went into practice with his father who began his dental practice in Americus after the war in 1945. This was his 40th year of serving the dental needs of his hometown.

Bagley was civically involved, and active in his community serving on numerous boards and serving the city Leslie for four terms as mayor, having moved there in 2000.

An avid golfer and outdoorsman, Bagley also trained his bird dogs and loved farming the land.
He is survived by his wife Bobbie S. Bagley of Leslie; a son George W. Bagley V of Atlanta, and a daughter, Mimi Jennings and husband Phil of Soperton; a sister, Lisa Bagley Worden of Bucks County, Pennsylvania; a niece and a nephew.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. John’s Church, Southland Road, Americus. A luncheon will be held immediately following the service at the Lee Council House in Americus where the family will receive friends.
