A mostly dead tree, on the grounds of the former Central Baptist Church on South Lee Street, Americus, toppled during the torrential rains here Monday night. The tree fell over after its roots gave way in the saturated soil. The tree fell toward the street instead of onto the building, landing across a hedge. Sumter County EMA Director Nigel Poole said there was no other reported damage due to the rainy, windy conditions.
