During his teenage years in the 1930s and 1940s, young Jimmy Carter spent most of his free time as a member of the Plains High School baseball team. His love and compassion for the sport was prevalent from an early age, and to this day he is an enthusiastic supporter of the game. Even while he was in office from 1976-1981, President Carter would come home to Plains and challenge members of the press to a friendly game of softball. With Carter family members and Secret Service officers on his team, President Carter sentimentally hosted the game on the same baseball field that sparked his interest as a boy.
Today, the baseball field at Plains High School is preserved and protected by the Jimmy Carter National Historic Site. We are looking for volunteers to serve as a groundskeeper and assist in maintaining its historical glory. Duties would include, but are not limited to, prepping the field for our annual wooden-bat baseball tournament held in the spring. All equipment and training will be provided.
