SGTC Lady Jets capture first conference win with defeat of Andrew College

AMERICUS – The South Georgia Technical College (SGTC) Lady Jets recently captured their first Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association (GCAA) conference win of the 2016-17 season with a 90-55 victory over Andrew College.
The win moved the Lady Jets into first place in the GCAA with a 1-0 conference record and a 12-2 overall record. Central Georgia Technical College is currently in second place with 1-0 and 9-6 records, followed by Georgia Highlands College with a 1-0 mark in conference play and a 4-8 overall record. Central Georgia also defeated Andrew College and Georgia Highlands defeated Albany Tech in conference play.
The Lady Jets had five players in double-figures in the win over Andrew College. Freshman guard, Kanna Suzuki, was the leading scorer for the Lady Jets with 15 points. Suzuki was followed by Camille Coleman, a sophomore transferwho added 14 points.
Another sophomore transfer, Shaineequah Fluellyn, tossed in 13 points. Freshman forward, Houlfat Mahouchiza, added 12 points and sophomore transfer center, Desiree Corbin, closed out the double-figure scoring with 10 points and 12 rebounds.
Returning sophomore guard, La’Deja James, added eight points, five rebounds and five assists. Freshmen, Sceret Ethridge and Trakyra Kidd, both scored six points. Marina Balaguer, Esther Adenike, and Madison Cameron each contributed two points.
The Lady Jets scored first and pulled ahead 33-17 by the end of the first quarter. They stretched that lead to 54-26 at the half. Andrew came back after the half and outscored the Lady Jets 24-17 to close the gap, but South Georgia Tech rallied in the fourth quarter and took the 90-55 win based on a 19-5 run in that final period.
The Lady Jets will take a break now for the holidays, but will return to action on Dec. 29-30 in the Lady Jets Holiday Classic in the Hangar on the Americus campus. The first game on Dec. 29 will begin at 5:00 p.m. with Georgia Highlands taking on St. Petersburg. The Lady Jets will face Broward College at 7:00 p.m.
On Dec. 30, Georgia Highlands will play Broward at 2:00 p.m. and the Lady Jets will take on St. Petersburg at 4:00 p.m.
