PLAINS — On Jan. 16, the Jimmy Carter National Historic Site is partnering with the Lillian Carter Health and Rehabilitation Center to celebrate the 2017 Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service. Members of the surrounding communities are encouraged to join us from 2:30-3:30 p.m. in a friendly game of bingo with the nursing patients of the Lillian Carter Health and Rehabilitation Center, located at 225 Hospital St. in Plains.
The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. spent the entirety of his life dedicated to the needs of others. He fought for social equality and was a leading figure in the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s. King inspired millions of individuals to go beyond their comfort zones and do what is right. On Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service, Americans across the country are encouraged to give back to their own communities – in big ways and small. This Federal “day on, not off” was designed to keep King’s vision alive so that future generations will realize the selflessness of such a remarkable leader.
Similarly, “Miss” Lillian Carter, mother of former President Jimmy Carter, never let a day go by without showcasing her genuine love for all of God’s people. As a registered nurse, “Miss” Lillian allowed people of all colors to unapologetically enter her home, oftentimes going against the norms of the Jim Crowe-era south. Later in life she travelled to India with the Peace Corps, proving that one is never too old to make a difference in this world. Today, the Lillian Carter Health and Rehabilitation Center operates on the same visions of love and care that the wonderful “Miss” Lillian possessed.
