MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The Georgia Southwestern men’s basketball team suffered a 66-63 defeat on Jan. 11 against the University of Montevallo in Trustmark Arena.
GSW fell to 4-9 overall and 2-4 in Peach Belt Conference (PBC) play, while Montevallo snapped a two-game losing skid to improve to 10-3, 4-2 in the PBC.
It was a live or die by the three-pointer kind of night for the Hurricanes, who led by as many as seven points in the first half after  the team sank eight of 17 from long range over the opening 20 minutes and took a 37-35 lead into the halftime break.
In the second half GSW was held to three of nine from beyond the arc.
The Hurricanes struggled through a scoring drought in the second half where Cameron Clayton had GSW’s only three points over a span of nearly eight minutes (7:47). Clayton made a layup with 16:05 to give the Hurricanes their last lead of the evening, 43-42. Montevallo answered with an 11-1 run where Clayton scored the lone GSW point.
The Falcons could not put GSW away, however, as the Hurricanes rallied from an 11-point deficit to pull within three points, 64-61, with 1:32 to play. After a steal by Tevin Wise, Brandon Price knocked down a pair of free throws to cut the lead to a single point, 64-63, with 18 seconds on the clock.
Tony Bagtas returned the favor by making two from the charity stripe for Montevallo to set up one final possession for GSW. The Hurricanes had to force a contested three-pointer that was off the mark and allowed Montevallo to pick up the win.
Wise led the Hurricanes in scoring for the second straight game. Wise dropped in 22 points behind eight of 13 shooting, including six of 11 from beyond the arc. Price added 21 points. Clayton pulled down a career-best 10 rebounds. Cameron Dozier dished out five assists.
The Hurricanes travel to USC Aiken on Jan. 14 for a 3:30 p.m. game.
