Ellaville-Schley historic society board meets

At 7:00 p.m. Jan. 10, the Ellaville-Schley County Historical Society board held its first meeting of 2017 in the historical office in the newly renovated Schley County Courthouse.
President Nancy McMath Young called the meeting to order and Larry Dillard opened with prayer.
All board members were present: Kim Lawhorn, John Greene, Larry Wall, Wilbur Justice, Larry Dillard, and Marianne Phillips.
The board is excited about some activities that will be coming up soon.
The annual Membership Dinner Party is Feb. 18. This is always a very interesting event with members participating in discussion and sharing of local history.
Sammy Lee of Schley County is speaker. Invitations will be sent out soon.
The annual Membership Meeting will be held in March, and is open to everyone who is interested in preserving local history. All members will receive a letter in the mail before this special meeting. If anyone would like an application for membership, stop by the Ellaville Floral Shop.
A special dedication ceremony will be held in April; more about this will be announced later.
The historical society is asking everyone to please donate any kind of history for the local history book update: documents, photos, etc. Please make copies.

Schley County Family Connection to meet

Schley County Family Connection has its first meeting of 2017 at noon Jan. 26 at the Thomas Edwin Wall Post 191 American Legion. RSVP to John Greene for a meal count.

Ellaville Methodist women meet

On Jan. 12, the Ellaville United Methodist Church UMW met for the first time in the new year.
The meeting was called to order by the new president, Barbara Usry, who opened with prayer.
Secretary Ann Gill gave her report and Treasurer Judy Gattis gave hers.
A special guest, Julia Wittenhagen, was welcomed. She will be teaching knitting classes.
There were 11 present at the meeting: Barbara Usry, Judy Gattis, Mary Ellen McCorkle, Darlene Lewis, Sharon Wall, Julia Wittenhagen, Ann Gill, Marianne Phillips, Nora Morrow, Nancy McMath Young, and Ashley Taylor.
Barbara served delicious refreshments. The next meeting will be on Feb. 9.

Congratulations to Schley County’s GSW graduates

Ellaville and Schley County congratulate the six students who have just graduated from Georgia Southwestern State University on Dec. 9. These graduates were among approximately 400 students that graduated that day.
The graduates from Ellaville were: Leslie Bailey, bachelor of science in early childhood education; Amber DeLoach, master’s in early childhood education; Amy Usry, master’s in early childhood education; Mary Jennings, master’s in early childhood education; Akiebia Hicks, bachelor of arts in history; Arthur Young, master’s in education in middle school grades.

Look what’s being offered in Ellaville

Have you ever wanted to learn how to knit? Well you have the opportunity now to learn by taking classes from Julia Wittenhagen.
Her classes will be offered at 7 p.m. Thursdays at the Ellaville United Methodist Church in the Social Hall.
There will be no charge for the first three weeks. Julia will supply each person with their needles and thread for three weeks. ¬She wants everyone to make sure that they ¬¬want to knit and will love this art. She has already signed up six students.
