AMERICUS — South Georgia Technical College (SGTC) criminal justice technology students in Teresa McCook’s justice administration class recently welcomed Chief Deputy Eric Bryant of the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office and Chief Eric Finch of the Montezuma Police Department as guest speakers.
“Chief Bryant spoke to the students about the duties and responsibilities that he has as the Chief Deputy for the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office,” explained McCook, “and the next week, Chief Finch came and spoke of his role and duties as the chief of police in Montezuma.”
After hearing from Bryant and Finch, the students were able to distinguish between the differences of the two types of administrator positions for the two organizations. Both officers gave specific examples of what their jobs consisted of, enabling students to compare the experiences of the two officers to what they’ve been learning about in class.
“I appreciate when I call on these agency heads and they take the time to come and speak to my classes,” said McCook. “The textbook explains so much, but having real life experience to supplement it enhances the classroom experiences and allows my students to comprehend the information more easily.”
