ATLANTA —  South Georgia Technical College (SGTC) participated in the 3rd annual REACH Day (Realizing Educational Achievement Can Happen) recently at the Georgia Capitol in Atlanta. Over 200 REACH scholars and 100 program coordinators from across the state where on hand at the event.
Georgia Governor Nathan Deal and first lady Sandra Deal met with REACH Scholars at the Capitol. Sandra Deal attended a special luncheon and senior recognition ceremony at the Georgia Railroad Freight Depot. The luncheon was followed by a college and career fair for the REACH Scholars.
SGTC President John Watford, Ed.D., Vice President of Academic Affairs David Kuipers and SGTC High School Initiatives Specialists Brittny Wright and Beth Brooks also attended the event.
The REACH Scholarship Program was launched by Governor Deal in 2012, and is a needs-based mentorship and scholarship program designed to encourage economically disadvantaged students, starting in middle school, to persist in their educational pursuits. Students are provided with the academic, social and financial support needed to graduate from high school, access college, achieve post-secondary success and be prepared for the 21st century workforce. REACH currently serves 685 scholars in 69 participating school systems across the state.
The Georgia House of Representatives and the Georgia State Senate proclaimed Jan. 25 as REACH Day at the Capitol in honor of the event.
