DAWSON — The Lower Chattahoochee River Soil and Water Conservation District board of supervisors and its local sponsors held their Annual Conservationist of the Year banquet at the USDA Service Center in Dawson on Jan. 17. Conservationist of the Year winner for Schley County is Jimmy Storey. His Schley County farm is made up of 200 acres of crop land, consisting primarily of cotton, corn, and peanuts. Storey is a first-generation farmer who has farmed most of his life. Conservation efforts practiced by Storey on his farm include: terraces, cover crops, and conversion from diesel to electric energy. He also owns and operates Pine Oak Products Inc., which came about after helping his father in the timber business for 35 years. Storey was recognized as Logger of the Year in 1991. Born in Webster County, he moved to Schley County in his early 20’s. He and his wife of 52 years, Shirley, have four children: Paula, Martin, Iris and Angel and eight grandchildren. They live in Ellaville and attend Shiloh Baptist Church.
