Schley County 4-H’ers attended District Project Achievement

Three students represented Schley County at the Southwest District Junior/ Senior 4-H District Project Achievement Feb. 3-5 at Rock Eagle’s 4-H Center.
Approximately 600 seventh-12th grade 4-H’ers from 44 counties attended the annual project competition.
Lilly Grace Harbuck, a seventh grader from Schley County Middle School and a Junior 4-H’er, placed second for her Health Project on scoliosis. Eighth grader Anna Trussell placed first and Shian Smith placed fourth for their History Projects on Nintendo and Pokemon, consecutively.
Senior 4-H’ers, ninth-12th grades, representing Schley County High School were Mari Beth Arthur placing third in the Sheep and Goat Meat Project with her demonstration on problem kids; Anna Trussell placed first in Arts and Crafts Projects. She will advance to compete at the 75th Georgia 4-H State Congress in July.
To compete at the District level each 4-H’er must compete a 4-H Portfolio of their projects in each area of subjects. These are submitted prior to the contest for judging; at the actual competition, they will present an illustrated demonstration on one subject in their project area. The portfolio and demonstration scores are combined to determine the winner.
All 4-H’ers, in addition to their individual projects and demonstrations, participated in group discussions, recreational activities, and special assembly programs. Campaigning and elections for Junior and Senior District board members are also held during this weekend. Other highlights included the annual District Slideshow and the 4-H Dance, which is always held on Saturday night after the winners of the projects are announced. The weekend concluded with an assembly where District board, Junior and Senior board members were installed.
Attending with the Schley County 4-H’ers was Brenda Welch, Schley County Extension associate, who was extremely proud with the accomplishments of each of these 4-H students.

Ellaville Methodist Wesleyan Circle meets

The Ellaville United Methodist Church Wesleyan Circle met at 7 p.m. Feb. 6 at the church.
President Sharon Wall called the meeting to order with Nora Morrow opening with prayer.
The circle has a special project, selling knives of all kinds, vanilla flavoring, and Danny Duzzits (stainless steel scrubbers). If interested contact Sharon Wall and she’ll show you a catalog.
Nora Morrow presented the program, speaking on special sayings, and poems she has collected for years.
After the program, Jacquelyn Dillard served refreshments of blueberry cobbler topped with ice cream, and coffee.
Those attending, in addition to those already mentioned, were Mary Ellen McCorkle, Brenda Phillips, Ann Gill, and Nancy McMath Young.

American Legion invites veterans to join

The Thomas Edwin Wall Post 191 American Legion in Ellaville is inviting all veterans to become a member. Meetings are held at 7 p.m. every third Thursday at the Legion Post, 142 Ga. Highway 153 in Ellaville. Come to the side door.

Birth announcement

Sam and Ashley Way announce the birth of a daughter, Olivia Adalynn Way, on Feb. 2, 2017, in Columbus. The infant weighed 6 lbs. 2 oz. and measured 19.75 in. ¬¬at birth. She will be called Livie. She has two sisters, Breanna and Heavenly, and two brothers, C.J. and Robert. Grandparents are Paul and Berta Cox of Oglethorpe, and Clarence Way and Mitzi Way of Ellaville. Nell Way of Ellaville is her great-grandmother.

Ellaville Dollar General moving to new location

The Ellaville Dollar General has purchased the former Wal-Mart Express building and will be moving into the new building by summer. A Grand Opening will be announced later.
Dollar General is very happy that they can expand their store so they can better serve their customers. The store will offer fresh meats, produce, and gasoline at everyday low prices.
Dollar General purchased 41 former Wal-Mart Express stores in July 2016. The new store is approximately 12,000 sq. ft., compared to Dollar General’s 9,100 sq. ft. The new store will also provide customers with a fresh, new layout, which will be more customer friendly with a faster check out.
