4-H Camp: Sumter County 4-H camp registration has begun. All 5th – 12th grade youth are invited to register for the 2017 Georgia 4-H camping season. Fifth & sixth graders will attend summer Cloverleaf Camp July 3-7 at Fortson 4-H Center in Hampton. 4-H’ers will enjoy a fun week of zip line and rock climbing wall, archery, canoeing, swimming, water games and sports. In addition, 4-H’ers will travel off-center to Stone Mountain Park, White Water Theme Park and Atlanta Motor Speedway. Scholarships, fundraisers, and payment plans are available. Headstart Recruitment: Southwest Georgia Community Action Council Inc. is recruiting for Head Start/Early Head Start for the 2017-18 school year. This is a federally funded program designed to meet the needs of preschool children ages 0-5, pregnant women, and their families. Early Head Start students must be six weeks to three years old. Please bring as many blooms that you have available any camellia varieties for entry and display in the show. A special novice show class is available for home gardeners to enter blooms and compete for prizes. There is no cost to enter blooms and experts are available to help identify and prepare blooms for entry. Faith Clinic: Sumter Faith Clinic is a non-profit organization directed at meeting the spiritual and health care needs of residents of Sumter County who do not have health insurance or an affordable means to health care. Services include basic, non-emergent medical care of acute conditions as well as treatment of some chronic conditions. Services are delivered by volunteers. The clinic is located at 127 S. Jackson St. next to First Presbyterian Church. Hours of operation are 6-9 p.m. Mondays and 1-5 p.m. Thursdays.

Outdoor water use for the purpose of planting, growing, managing, or maintaining ground cover, trees, shrubs, or other plants is allowed daily, but limited to between the hours of 4 p.m. and 10 a.m. Outdoor water use for any purposes other than watering of plants, such as power washing or residential car washing, is limited to an odd/even address watering schedule. Attention Solid Waste Generators: The City of Americus has implemented a fats, oils, and grease (FOG) program as directed in the city’s Commercial Pretreatment Ordinance. This program is an environmental program designed to protect the sanitary sewer system and wastewater treatment plants from commercial waste. Commercial waste is defined as nontoxic, nonhazardous liquid wastewater containing fats, oil, grease, and food scraps generated by a food operation or institutional food facility, and any oil waste residue produced from vehicle maintenance or car washing. Facilities that create this waste are called Commercial Waste Generators (CWG). Current Federal, state and local provisions mandates the City to address these issues. Volunteers Needed: SOWEGA Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA), office serving a six-county area, needs volunteers to work with abused and neglected children who are involved in the court system. Adult Reading Skills: Adult Literacy Action Inc. has several openings for adult individuals interested in improving their reading skills. The organization is affiliated with the Lake Blackshear Regional Library. Volunteer tutors are available to work with individuals on a one-on-one basis.
