Microscopically

Fifth-grade scholars from Laura Gerlach’s class at Furlow Charter School recently enjoyed investigating specimens of living organisms at a greater magnification. They started off with a web quest of microscopes, microorganisms, and cells and their organelles by visiting informational sites, listening to songs, and playing with online interactives. Then, the class shared their findings from the virtual tours through a discussion of how the power of magnification is calculated with a various combination of ocular and objective lenses. Finally, scholars used compound light microscopes to observe plant, animal, and insect tissues. Each scholar sketched the magnified images seen through the eyepiece. Shown here, Camron Evans, Ni’Asia Williams, and Matthew Kuipers take turns investigating a specimen of a honey bee leg.
