Sophomore forward, Andre Kennedy, of Albany was the only member of the South Georgia Technical College (SGTC) Jets 2016-17 basketball team to be included in the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association (GCAA) Division I Men’s basketball All-Region team, recently.
Kennedy joined Lady Jets, Shaineequah Fluellyn, Esther Adenike, Desiree Corbin, Camille Coleman, and Kanna Suzuki, from the SGTC Lady Jets in being recognized for their outstanding play of the court this season.
Kennedy, who started 27 of the Jets’ 30 games this season, was selected as a second team All-Region player. He averaged 14.3 points per game for the Jets and hit 52 percent of his shots. He was a 30 percent three-point shooter and averaged over 77 percent from the foul line. He was the leading scorer for the Jets this season.
The 6’ 7” Westover graduate was also the team’s leading rebounder. He averaged 8.4 rebounds per game, including 3.2 offensive rebounds and 5.2 defensive rebounds. Kennedy helped lead the Jets to a 5-11 regular season conference record and a 13-20 overall record.
Kennedy was the leading scorer with 26 points when the Jets upset the second -anked Gordon College Highlanders in the first round of the NJCAA Region XVII tournament to help his team advance to the NJCAA Region XVII Final Four.
Fluellyn, who led the Lady Jets to the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region XVII title with 32 points in the championship game against Georgia Highlands, was recognized recently with the Most Valuable Player honors for the NJCAA Region XVII Division I All-Tournament team.
Adenike, a forward from Lago, Nigeria, was also selected to the NJCAA Region XVII Women’s Division I All-tournament team for her performance in the NJCAA Region XVII tournament.
Fluellyn was listed as a second team All-Region player in the GCAA Division I women’s regular season poll, but her performance on the court in the NJCAA Region XVII tournament allowed her to earn the MVP tournament award.
Fluellyn helped lead the Lady Jets to a 13-1 conference record and a 28-4 overall record. She scored 32 points in the championship game of the tournament as well 18 points against Chattahoochee Tech in the semi-finals and 14 points against Albany.
Adenike also turned in good performances in the tournament with 10 rebounds and one point against Albany Tech, six points and eight rebounds in the Chattahoochee Tech match-up, and 12 points and nine rebounds against Georgia Highlands in the championship game.
Earlier this season, SGTC head coach, James Frey, was listed as the GCAA Division I women’s Co-Coach of the Year for leading his team to their third GCAA title in four seasons.
Sophomores, Corbin and Coleman were both selected to the GCAA first team All-Region squads and Suzuki was selected as the league’s top Freshman this year.
