AMERICUS — South Georgia Technical College (SGTC) faculty and staff members were recently called on for help in assisting the victims of severe weather in SGTC’s service area and beyond, and they answered that call by coming together to collect items for those families in need.
Tornadoes and severe thunderstorms ravaged South Georgia in late January, leaving many Georgians without their homes and personal belongings. Commissioner Gretchen Corbin of the Technical College System of Georgia (TCSG) coordinated an effort among several of Georgia’s technical colleges to collect needed items for those who had been affected by the storms.
SGTC President John Watford, Ed.D., volunteered SGTC to be a drop-off location for the items, which included necessities like towels, socks, cleaning supplies, non-perishable food items, snacks, blankets, and more. SGTC’s commercial truck driving department, led by instructor Robert Cook, also collaborated in the effort by picking up items from other locations and delivering the freight to Albany and other affected areas.
Anthony Parker, president of Albany Technical College; Tina Anderson, president of Wiregrass Technical College in Valdosta; and Craig Wentworth, president of Southern Regional Technical College in Thomasville; identified the items needed in their areas, and SGTC staff members rushed to collect those items.
Some of the individuals who were instrumental in helping to fill one of the 18-wheelers from SGTC’s commercial truck driving program included SGTC WIOA Coordinator Sandhya Muljibhai, SGTC Accounting Director Robin Bell, SGTC Special Populations/Disability Coordinator LaKenya Johnson, SGTC Psychology instructor Michele Seay, and SGTC Athletics Assistant Terri Battle.
