Montezuma man shot to death

MONTEZUMA — Shortly after 11:30 p.m. Sunday, emergency personnel responded to Cedar Court in reference to shots being fired. Upon their arrival, they found Willie Simpson Jr. lying in the roadway with what appeared to be a gunshot wound. Simpson was transported to Phoebe Sumter Medical in Americus by Macon County EMS where he was later pronounced dead. Montezuma Police Chief Eric Finch said, in a news release, “Our prayers are with the Simpson family during this difficult time. I am grateful that no other person was injured.”
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the Montezuma Police Department executed a search warrant at 709 Cedar Court during the early morning hours of Monday. Investigators obtained information that Tony Maurice Davis Jr. 32 of 709 Cedar Court was the shooter in this incident and he later turned himself in to the Montezuma Police Department. Investigators are still trying to piece the case together.
Chief Finch said, “I would like to thank the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Macon County Sheriff’s Office, Oglethorpe Police Department, Macon County Medical Service, Montezuma Fire Department, Capt. Rodney Flynt, Officers Leigha Chavers, Ryan Ragsdale, and Jason Bolden for assisting in this case.
Currently, Davis is being held at the Macon County Jail pending warrants after discussing the case with the District Attorney’s Office.
