ALBANY – Zach Barron delivered a two-run home run in the eighth inning to halt an Albany State University (ASU) comeback and propel Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW) to a 7-4 win on April 25 at the ASU Baseball Complex.
GSW wrapped up its regular season with the victory to improve to 19-27 overall while Albany State dropped to 16-25.
The Hurricanes loaded the bases in the first inning and, with one out, Barron drove in the first run of the game with a sacrifice fly to center field.
ASU evened the score in the third inning when Bryant Prather scored from third on a wild pitch with two outs.
GSW quickly answered in the fourth behind back-to-back RBI doubles from Josh Logan and Alex Kranick and an RBI single by Jonathan Martin. The Hurricanes led the rest of the way.
Following a GSW run in fifth, Albany State mounted a comeback attempt by scoring three consecutive runs to pull within 5-4.
Jared Jones opened the eighth inning with a single for the Hurricanes and scored on the Barron line drive blast that curled inside the left field foul pole.
Mitch Holloway was called upon to shut down the Golden Rams in the ninth. Holloway earned his sixth save of the spring which ties him with James Wilson (2007) for the program record during the school’s NCAA era.
Barron’s home run also ties an NCAA era record for the Hurricanes, matching Byron Haynes (2010) for most in a season.
Kranick finished four for four at the plate with two doubles and a pair of walks. He is a hit away from tying the school record (77) for most in a season. Barron went two for two with a walk and three RBIs. Martin and Evan Alderman added two hits apiece. Martin extended his hitting streak to 18 games and Alderman is right behind him at 15.
Albany State did not have a batter finish with multiple hits.
GSW spread the work over seven pitchers. Starter, Lawson Stewart, handled two innings. Freshman, A.J. Hayes, (1-1) picked up the first win of his collegiate career with two innings on the hill. Jordan McIlwain, Matt Hubbard, Coty Graham and Andrew Patrick took an inning apiece before Holloway tossed the scoreless ninth.
Albany State used four pitchers in the game. Starter, Brock Roundree, (0-1) worked three and one-third innings, allowing eight hits and four runs. Brandon Pearson followed with three and two-thirds innings on the hill. Pearson held GSW to a pair of hits and one run. Eden Payano took the eighth inning and surrendered the two-run shot to Barron. Michael Davis covered the ninth.
GSW has the next two weeks to prepare for the Peach Belt Conference Tournament that begins May 10 in Florence, S.C.
