Rainbow Garden Club brings back ‘Yard of the Month’

The Ellaville Rainbow Garden Club is again going to select a local “Yard of the Month,” and will award a special sign that will appear in the yard of the winning yard in Ellaville or Schley County each month.
This is a special recognition by the Garden Clubs of Georgia Inc. and has been ongoing for years.
The Ellaville Rainbow Garden Club has always had lovely yards to choose from for the competition.
The new sign was designed and painted just for this purpose. Darlene Lewis, Judy Gattis and Carlene Beckwith serve on this special committee which is in charge of this project.
If you would like to nominate someone’s yard for the “Yard of the Month,” call Darlene Lewis at 727-710-7496.

Schley 4-H Summer Class ongoing

Summer is now in full swing and the first project for Schley County 4-H girls was an afternoon of sewing with the “Sew What Club.” They’ve had a very generous donation of different sewing items from Penny Daniel.
Th 4-H’ers were able to choose a kit in which they could learn the different techniques of stitching by hand. These busy sewers chose a kit that contained everything they needed to complete their project. Sewing is a dying art that many young people are not exposed to anymore.
If you interested in any of the many activities that the Schley County 4-H has to offer, stop by the “Old Court House “ downtown or call Brenda Welch at the Schley County Extension Office.

Schley County FFA attends 89th state convention

Schley County High School’s FFA traveled to Macon on April 27-29 to attend the 89th Georgia Future Farmers of America State Convention. The convention consisted of seven sessions in which awards were given, motivational speakers spoke, students participated in a talent show, 2017-2018 State Officers were elected, and more.
Out of 12 Schley County FFA students that attended the convention, six students received awards at the convention.
Haley Nutt placed 2nd in state with her Agricultural Processing Proficiency Application. Michael Wise, Shelbi Gladden, Caitlin Strickland, Savannah Belcher and Malik Edwards all received their State FFA degrees.
In addition, the Schley County FFA Chapter received an award for having 100 percent membership for the year.
Congratulations to each and every one receiving these awards this year. They always look so nice with their navy blue coats and the FFA emblems.

Historical society to hold special dedication service

The Ellaville-Schley County Historical Society is planning a special dedication ceremony in memory of and in honor of all Schley County elected officials since Dec. 22,1857. This special dedication will be held from 5:30-7 p.m. June 20 at the newly renovated Schley County Courthouse downtown. The dedication will be held upstairs in the courtroom. Don’t worry about climbing the stairs because the county has installed an elevator in the courthouse.
All past and present elected officials are invited to attend, as well as the public. Please make plans to attend this special dedication and to stay for refreshment afterward. For more information call Nancy McMath Young at 937-2116.
Memorial weekend in Ellaville was red, white and blue
If you came to Ellaville during Memorial Day weekend, you couldn’t help but notice the red, white and blue. With all the American flags flying around the Park and throughout the town, it was a beautiful sight. These flags have been placed in memory or in honor of all veterans from Ellaville and Schley County.
The Thomas Edwin Wall Post 191 American Legion started this special project years ago.
If you didn’t see the flags on Memorial Day weekend, make plans to visit Ellaville on July 4.
