Schley 4-H’ers participate in removing flags

The Schley County 4-H’ers volunteered to remove the small American flags that had been placed in Andersonville National Cemetery for Memorial Day weekend.
There are more than 21,000 graves of service men and women and their spouses buried in Andersonville National Cemetery.  Graves were marked with the small American flags by volunteers.
Andersonville National Historic Site welcomed many visitors over the Memorial Day Weekend and throughout the year. On Tuesday morning after, the flags were removed from each grave by volunteers.
“ It’s a humbling experience to see that each flag represents a person that served our country,” said Brenda Welch, Schley County Extension 4-H program assistant. She also said that it’s an honor to take part in the community service project with the 4-H’ers.
Those that volunteered to help remove the flags were Lily Harbuck, Sariah Hathaway, Mackenzie Wohrley and Amber Wohrley. There were also volunteers from Taylor, Marion, Macon and Peach counties and their adult leaders. A very special thank you goes to the Schley County Extension agent, Matt Murdoch, for helping.
After the removal of the flags they all traveled to Americus for lunch and then to Plains to tour Jimmy Carter’s Boyhood farm and home, and then to Plains High School. They finished the day by having ice cream in downtown Plains.

Schley retired educators group makes donation to schools

The Schley County Retired Educators Association presented two $100 checks recently, one presented to the Schley County Elementary School Media Center and the other to the Schley County Middle/High School Media Center.
President William Johnson presented the checks to Media Specialist Frances Heath and Principal Brian Hall of the elementary school and Media Specialist Pat Gordy and Principal Todd West of the middle/high school. Other members of the Association who joined in the presentation were Lou Chase, Vivian Griffin, Suzanne Roquemore, Deborah Hawver, Joyce Owsley and Patti Wurtz.
These two checks were presented in memory of family members of current members of the Association: Joseph Eason, Carrie Johnson, Jeanette Forsythe and Dale Melton, and also in memory of Angeli Smith who was a member.

GED classes are offered in Ellaville by SGTC

South Georgia Technical College’s Adult Education Program reminds the public that GED classes are offered in Ellaville on a continuing basis at the Ellaville City Center, next to City Hall.
Classes are held from 8 a.m.-noon and 1-4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Classes are also held from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
