School supplies needed for Back to School Bash

The Schley County Health Department and the Schley County Family Connections are teaming up to host a Back to School Bash for 250 low-income students in Schley County. This event will be held from 10 a.m.-noon Saturday, July 22 at the Schley County Health Department. Free refreshments will be served and there will be several vendors and local service providers on hand with information on the free health programs and services available in Schley County. A Certified Passenger Safety Technician will be there to conduct free car seats safety checks.
Parents, grandparents and guardians may sign up students for free school supplies at the Schley County Health Department or at the Schley County Department of Family and Children Services. Parents and their children must be present in order to receive their supplies. Any supplies that are left will be given to the Schley County School System.
Schley County Family Connection encourages all Schley County parents that are not in need of these supplies for their children to please pick up a few supplies and donate them to this special event. You may drop off supplies at the health department or DFCS.
To donate supplies, make a monetary donation, or set up a booth at event call Kristy Smith, Schley County Health nurse at 229-937-2208. Make contributions payable to the Schley County Community Foundation, P.O. Box 606, Ellaville GA 31806. The Foundation is a 501-C-3 and your donation is tax deductible.

Alaskan Tundra missionaries return home

Twice a year there is a local mission group that takes a trip to Alaska. This Alaskan Tundra Mission Team left for Alaska on June 9 for another mission trip to the village of Teller, Alaska.
The team arrived in Nome, Alaska, on Sunday evening and then made a two-hour trip to Teller where they stayed in the Lutheran Church. While in Teller the men worked on construction projects at the church. The team also held Vacation Bible School with the children in the village, having about 30 children each day.
On Sunday evening, a singing was held in the church and Tuesday the women hosted a ladies night and Richelle Bivins taught the women how to decorate cookies.
This team consisted of Mack and Bebe Herrington, Eddie and Sharon Watson, B.J., Jake and Allie McLemore, Noah Barrows, Richelle and Grace Bivins, Shelly Harbuck, Mikki Bell and Cati Greene, Edwin Willis, Dunlie Castleberry, Robby Hinton and Mark Long.
The team arrived back home on June 14. The next trip is planned for Sept. 1-8, 2017. If anyone is interested in going, call Eddie Watson at 229-942-4591.

Mary Nan Pilcher visits family in Florida

On June 1, Mary Nan Pilcher flew to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, to visit her daughter Cynthia and her family, husband Mike and their daughters Kayla and Sarah in Parkland, Florida.
She attended her granddaughters’ Dance Recital. While there, they went to the beach, shopping and enjoyed being together. Mary Nan said it rained every day which is not normal afternoon Florida showers. It rained over 10 inches in one day alone. Everything was flooded, she said.
She helped with Vacation Bible School the day before coming home. Cynthia was in charge of registration. There were over 400 children that attended and over 200 helpers plus the teachers.
Mary Nan returned home on June 13 and said it was a wonderful trip.

Ellaville celebrates 4th of July

I hope you came to Ellaville or rode through downtown and saw all of the lovely red, white and blue flags flying around the park and outlining the sidewalks downtown. The Thomas Edwin Wall Post 191 American Legion always flies American flags on special occasions such as this.
Each flag represents a U.S. veteran who was or is a member of the local American Legion. Each flag pole has the member’s name.
This is one of the times during the year the flags are flown and everyone remembers family and other loved ones who fought in war.
