AMERICUS – Georgia Southwestern State University head women’s soccer coach Enrique Rodriguez has announced the hiring of Luciane Wentz as his assistant coach for the 2017 season.
“I would like to thank coach Rodriguez and Athletic Director Mike Leeder for the amazing opportunity,” Wentz said. “Georgia Southwestern has a great staff and I’m ready to be an asset to the department and program. I’m very excited for this new journey and look forward to a great year being a part of the Hurricane family”.
Wentz enters her first season as a coach after playing in all 18 games as a senior at Thomas University in Thomasville, Ga., last fall. As a midfielder for the Night Hawks Wentz started 15 games and was fourth on the team with 1,422 minutes logged on the field. She scored the game winning goal in a 1-0 victory over Keiser (Oct. 29), while assisting on goals at Warner University (Oct. 1) and vs. Johnson & Wales (Oct. 27). Wentz tied for second on the team with 23 shots, eight of them coming on goal.
“I would think that Luciane will fulfill all the requirements we are looking for in an assistant women’s soccer coach at GSW,” Rodriguez said. “She is bringing a lot of energy and experience as a student-athlete competing in different levels from college through semi-pro and as a coach of youth teams. I am very pleased and I think the players are already taking a lot of her advice knowing she sees and feels the game in a different way coming from Brazil. Having the international perspective of the game will be very beneficial not only for them but also for the program.”
A native of Porto Alegre, Brazil, Wentz played her junior season at William Carey University in Hattiesburg, Miss. She played in 16 games and made five starts, scoring four goals and adding three assists. Wentz played and started every game as a freshman and sophomore at Ashford University in Clinton, Iowa.
