MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Sophomore Dylan Marshall scored less than two minutes into the Georgia Southwestern State University men’s soccer 2017 season and senior Silvio Polly and freshman Divin Moke added first half scores to lead the Hurricanes past Milligan College, 3-1, on Sept. 1 at Billy D. Hilyer Stadium on the campus in Faulkner University in a first-ever meeting between the schools.
The Hurricanes returned to Billy D. Hilyer Stadium two days later to earn a 2-1 victory over Texas A&M-Texarkana Sunday afternoon.
With the pair of wins, the Hurricanes jump to 2-0 on the young 2017 season.
To opwn the scoring in the season opener, Marshall beat three Milligan defenders to a deflected ball from Polly off a long punt from goalkeeper, Joshua Swift. Marshall flicked it past the Buffaloes’ charging keeper to quickly put the Hurricanes ahead, 1-0.
Marshall returned the favor by assisting Polly on the second score of the match. Marshall directed a header towards Polly, who dribbled in towards goal on the right side and delivered a shot inside the near post in the 12th minute.
Moke made the most of his collegiate debut when he lined up a shot in the 34th minute from straight away and put the Hurricanes up, 3-0.
Milligan shook off a shutout in the 85th minute to score the final goal of the match.
Both sides took four corner kicks over the 90 minutes. Polly led all players with five shot attempts.
When the ‘Canes returned to the pitch on Sept. 3, senior midfielder Chris Steinwachs put away two goals in the second half to lead GSW to a 2-1 victory over Texas A&M-Texarkana.
Steinwachs finally broke a scoreless tie in the 61st minute when he took a pass from Caleb Zolman just outside the 18-yard box and finished with a left-footed blast to the upper right corner past the diving Eagle goalkeeper Zak McCarthy.
Three minutes later the goal-scoring tandem switched places for another GSW chance. Steinwachs volleyed a nice ball to Zolman in front of the net looking for a finish, but McCarthy was able to make a diving save and keep the Hurricane lead at 1-0. This was just one of seven saves for McCarthy on nine Hurricane shots on goal.
The Eagles found an equalizer just a minute later. A Hurricane giveaway deep in the GSW side of the field led to a goal from Vinsent Nestorov in the 67th minute when he beat Swift, who left the box to try and stop the attack.
The Hurricanes responded with the game-winner in the 75th minute when Polly flicked the ball forward to a running Steinwachs, who finished with a beautiful one-touch strike past McCarthy.
Georgia Southwestern outshot Texas A&M-Texarkana 19-10.
The Hurricanes return to the field on Sept. 6 when they visit Brewton-Parker College for a 4:00 p.m. (EDT) kickoff.
The ‘Canes will return to their home field on Sept. 9, battling Concordia College. The ‘Canes Cornhole Challenge will be held during the match.
The Hurricanes’ next home match-up will be held on Sept. 12 against Point University.
