AMERICUS — A sharp-eyed detective saw something at lunchtime Monday that landed two out-of-towners in jail here.
According to the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office, Maj. Ralph Stuart, chief investigator, was leaving the Law Enforcement Center when he noticed a suspicious vehicle in front of the county’s public works department on McMath Mill Road. He saw someone in the vehicle place something on the roadside. He notified authorities to check that out while he followed the vehicle.
When he found that the bag left on the roadside contained marijuana, tobacco and cheeseburgers, he stopped the vehicle and arrested the two occupants. A “large amount” of cash was found inside the vehicle.
Arrested were Fredrick Devale Hill, 45, of Newnan, and Cynthia Carter, 30, of Newnan. They were both charged with crossing the guard line with contraband and distribution of marijuana, and were jailed.
