ELLAVILLE — Crisp County Sheriff Billy Hancock, veteran law enforcement official, was the featured speaker Sept. 10 at Hopewell United Methodist Church in Schley County for Hopewell’s Hometown Heroes Appreciation Day.
Schley County and Ellaville’s law enforcement and emergency services personnel were recognized and honored during the worship service which was dedicated to  local public servants.
Hopewell pastor, the Rev. Rickey Rushing, greeted the honorees saying, “We honor you and your work, and we remember you in our prayers.”
Chuck Pless, chair of Hopewell’s administrative council recognized Shane Tondee, Schley County sheriff; Robbie Lightner, Ellaville Police Chief; and Duane Montgomery, Schley County Emergency Management and Fire Services director.
Pless, a former Schley County deputy sheriff, expressed his personal love and appreciation for the public servants, some with whom he worked for many years. He thanked them for their selfless, tireless work on behalf of the citizens of Schley County.
Hancock’s message was Bible-based and described the hard work, personal sacrifice and considerable responsibility regularly undertaken by individuals working in law enforcement and emergency services. Hancock said, “Persons who provide public safety services are answering God’s call to help people. It’s a calling and they are responding.”
Hopewell’s expressed salute to these individuals declared, “Today we honor you for your unselfish dedication and commitment to serving our community. Thank you for all you do to make our lives better. You are truly our Hometown Heroes. Today is special, and so are you.”
Each honoree was presented gift items including a devotional book linked to serving persons in need.
Following the worship service, lunch was provided for the special guests and Hopewell members.
