ATLANTA — Robert John Koopal, 74, of Americus died Friday, Sept. 29, 2017, at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta. A native of Platte, South Dakota, he was born Feb. 1, 1943, to the late Martin Koopal and Elizabeth Kegel Koopal. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Americus. Mr. Koopal was a hard-working man and devoted to his family; he loved his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He was an avid pheasant hunter and enjoyed going back to South Dakota to hunt with members of his family.

A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m., Monday, Oct. 2, 2017, at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Americus. The Rev. Keith Parks will officiate the service. The family may be contacted at the Koopal residence, 176 Pheasant Drive in Americus.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Ruth Koopal of Americus; a daughter, Sandra Lynn Koopal of Americus; a son and daughter-in-law, Robert Dwight Koopal and Gloria of Americus; a sister and brother-in-law, Kathleen and Donald Menning of Corsica, S.D.; and a brother, Sherman Koopal of Platte, S.D. Also surviving are two grandchildren: Emily and Justin Smith of Plains, and Will Koopal of Phoenix, Ariz.; and two great-grandchildren: Olivia Smith and Davis Smith.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Cecil Koopal.
