AMERICUS — A car chase, originating in Montezuma in neighboring Macon County, resulted in one man being taken into custody without incident.
That was last weekend, on Sunday, Sept. 24.
That chase started shortly around lunchtime when the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office was notified by the Montezuma Police Department. The suspect was wanted by Dooly County authorities for a hit and run. When Montezuma Police attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver fled
The suspect drove all the way from Montezuma on Ga. Highway 49 South into Sumter County and into the city limits of Americus. State troopers from Georgia State Patrol Post 10, Americus, were notified and asked to assist in the chase.
State troopers conducted a maneuver on South Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in Americus near the main entrance of Premier Auto, bringing the vehicle to a halt and taking the suspect into custody. The suspect had a seizure and was taken to Phoebe Sumter Medical Center for treatment, and was later transferred to Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital in Albany.
That’s where crash number two starts.
Col. Eric Bryant, chief deputy, Sumter County Sheriff’s Office, told the Times-Recorder that the subject, Joshua Knight of Locust Grove, who was released from the hospital in Albany on Tuesday, somehow made his way back to Americus where he stole another vehicle from a residence on Memorial Mile in northern Sumter County, and took off.
The suspect was involved in another high-speed chase in the stolen vehicle and was finally stopped in Henry County and again taken into custody on Wednesday.
Bryant said that normally, a suspect who is treated at a medical facility is held until law enforcement has finished its work. He said when Knight was transferred to the Albany facility, the paperwork apparently did not go with him.
Bryant said Knight will be brought back to Sumter County to face several charges, in addition to theft of a motor vehicle. Authorities are currently investigating to determine if the suspect stole a vehicle in order to get to Americus on Tuesday.
