Construction on the Jackson Street train depot in Americus is coming along. The $1 million project, to be funded through SPLOST, will include the depot building, new and improved lighting along South Jackson from College Street to Church Street, some new sidewalks along South Jackson Street, restrooms and landscaping with ADA compliant infrastructure and some sitting areas. Following demolition of the old Rubo’s store, there will be an open area to be made available for other activities. The project is scheduled for completion in 45 to 60 days, dependent on permitting from the railroad. With the recent sale of the Heart of Georgia railway, the new owners’ permitting requirements have changed and the City of Americus is working through the new process.
