AMERICUS — Nikki Harris, an adjunct instructor of phlebotomy at South Georgia Technical College (SGTC), has been recognized by Phoebe Sumter Medical Center in the employee spotlight newsletter. She works as Phoebe Sumter’s Phlebotomist Team Leader.
Harris is a relatively new adjunct instructor at SGTC, but has had a 22-year career at Phoebe Sumter and currently serves as the hospital’s phlebotomist team leader. As the team leader, it is Harris’ responsibility to coordinate the phlebotomists as well as practice general duties such as drawing blood from a medical patient for clinical or medical testing, transfusions, donations or research.
Harris began dreaming of a career in phlebotomy when she was just a teenager.
“I accompanied my mother to a doctor’s appointment … and I saw a lady walking around with a tray. I asked her what she was doing and she told me she was a phlebotomist. From that moment on, I was intrigued by the thought of being a phlebotomist and doing it for a living,” she said.
“Not bad for someone who once count not stand the sight of blood,” the spotlight reads.
Harris is the daughter of SGTC’s Business and Industry specialist, Al Harris, and niece of SGTC’s High School coordinator, Vickie Austin.
