A change in seasons
Greetings from Americus Fire and Emergency Services! Much has been happening as of late here in Americus. We have begun a new season in leadership, as we have seen the appointment of Roger Bivins as fire chief. We couldn’t be happier to have him at the helm to guide us forward for years to come. Many thanks to our retired Chief Allen Erkhart for his many dedicated years of service. Happy Retirement Chief! We also have newly promoted Battalion Chief Terry Westbury, Capt. Jared Ward and Engineer Addison Walls who are quickly getting acclimated to their new duties. Congratulations to all these men for the commitment they have shown to serve the department and community.
As the beginning of the fall season has fast approached, so has the month of October. Gone is summer, as well as the back to school hustle and bustle. We are settling into one of our favorite times of the year. That’s right … it’s Fire Safety Month! Officially Fire Prevention week is Oct. 8-14, 2017, but we just can’t contain ourselves to just one week; we have a whole month! This year’s message is “Every second counts: Plan two ways out!” With this message our members will be focusing on using alternative teaching methods to reach children about fire safety. That means the beloved and sometimes elusive clowns will be making their annual appearances. Now these are no ordinary clowns. These are highly trained expert laughologists and educators bringing a fun and important message to our youth about Fire Prevention and safety. This is a responsibility we feel strongly about.
We will also be continuing our prevention efforts within the community as the month progresses. So, as October comes, help us celebrate the month with our fire safety initiatives.  Wave to the clowns, bring a child by the department for a visit, and help reiterate our message of safety. We are coming up soon on 125 years of service to the city and its citizens. Seasons have come and gone but our commitment has, is, and will continue to be to protect life and property. Change comes with time and progression. Help us be part of effective change in this great city we serve. Fire safety is not just an initiative it is a choice.
