AMERICUS – A group of Americus-Sumter High School students recently toured South Georgia Technical College (SGTC) recently and had the opportunity to visit different programs areas and learn more about the benefits of a technical education.
Members of the SGTC Jets basketball team served as campus hosts for the event and showed the students a variety of program areas. “This was an opportunity for South Georgia Technical College to showcase the different opportunities that are available to students while they are in high school and encourage them to consider continuing their education here after graduation,” said Dr. David Finley, SGTC Dean of Academic Affairs.

The students were divided into five groups and rotated through the High-Performance Engines/Motorsports, Automotive Technology, Auto Collision and Repair Technology, Diesel Technology, Culinary Arts, Electrical Systems, Electronics, Machine Tool, and Industrial Systems Technology program areas. Some of the activities that the students had the opportunity to participate in including baking cookies, preparing a car for new paint, testing voltage, and more. The SGTC instructors showed students how the knowledge they learn can have practical applications in the workforce.
“Students can read about things, but actually coming out and being able to put their hands on things makes them more aware of what is going on and lets them know what we have to offer at South Georgia Tech,” said SGTC Auto Collision and Repair Instructor Starlyn Sampson.  “That is what this entire day was about,” added Finley.

SGTC Machine Technology instructor Chad Brown explains to ASHS students that most products begin in a machine shop. Brown asked students to look at their cell phones as an example of a byproduct of machining.

“We had one or two students say that they didn’t realize what all SGTC had to offer,” explained Finley. “Today was about letting them see first-hand that South Georgia Technical College is a very cost-effective way for students to get into higher education and it can provide individuals with outstanding income opportunities after graduation.”
SGTC recently registration for an eight-week mini-mester. Classes started Oct. 10. SGTC has a one-stop admissions process that allows students to apply, enroll, and register in the same day. Students can also apply for financial aid during the registration process.
South Georgia Tech currently offers over 200 different associate degree, diploma, and short term technical certificate of credit classes.
