COLUMBUS – The Schley County Wildcats added another win to their 2017 campaign as the team traveled to Columbus to battle Region 4-A foes, the Brookstone Cougars, on the evening of Oct. 27.
The Wildcats came back from an early deficit in the tilt and managed to snag a last-quarter touchdown to best the Cougars 28-21 in the match-up.
With the win, the Wildcats improve their overall mark on the season to 6-3. Schley is currently 3-2 in Region 4-A.
The Cougars took an early lead in the first frame of the match by scoring a touchdown and tacking on an extra point. The Wildcats scored a touchdown of their own in the initial quarter, but their extra point attempt was thwarted. Leaving the visitors down 7-6 when the second stanza commenced.
The Wildcats made up lost ground in the second frame with a touchdown and a two-point conversion.
Schley added another seven points to their tally in the third quarter, while the Cougars strove to tie the score 21-21 when the final frame commenced.
In the fourth quarter, the Wildcats were able to pull ahead for good with a touchdown and a PAT kick to clinch the 28-21 win.
Calvin Sims led the Schley scorers with a pair of touchdowns in the match, followed closely by Ja’myron Clayton and Tra Sampson, who each scored one touchdown. Sampson also contributed the two-point conversion to the Wildcat win.
Schley place kicker, William Blackwell, added a pair of extra points for the Schley cause.
Schley quarterback, Garrett Peavy, connected on three passes in the tilt. Zykievious Walker added one completion to the Wildcat tally.
Clayton was on the receiving end of three passes for 48 yards gained through the air.
Sims set the bar high for the Wildcats on the ground, rushing for 193 yards on 27 carries. Sampson tacked on another 53 yards on 11 totes for the Wildcats and Alec Harris carried for 51 yards on five attempts.
The Wildcats amasses 297 total yards on the ground in the game.
Zamon Ross and Peyton Register each returned kicks for 38 and 33 yards, respectively.
Schley’s defense was on point in the tilt, with Derric Tatum leading the way with three solo tackles and nine assists. Walker, Sampson, and Harris each contributed three solo tackles as well, with Harris assisting on eight more. Dartavious Napper assisted on 12 tackles in the game.
Jonathan Thornton added one sack for a four-yard loss to the Wildcats’ stats.
Clayton and Sampson both intercepted Cougar passes in the match-up and Napper caused one Brookstone fumble.
The Wildcats will return to their home field on Nov. 3 to wrap up their regular-season competition with a test of their mettle against the Marion County Eagles.
