12 GSW soccer players named to PBC All-Academic Team

AMERICUS – Both the Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW) men’s and women’s soccer teams placed six players on the 2017 Peach Belt Conference All-Academic team, as announced by the league on Nov. 1.
Both teams are part of a season-long program recognizing the outstanding accomplishments of PBC student-athletes in the classroom as well as on the field.
To be eligible for the All-Academic team, a student-athlete must 1) participate in at least half of his/her team’s events and be either a starter or significant contributor; 2) have achieved a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) and 3) have completed at least one full academic year at his or her current institution and has reached sophomore athletic eligibility.
The Hurricanes had three athletes make the All-Academic team for a third time in senior Silvio Polly (3.885 Exercise Science), senior Josh Swift (3.874 Accounting) and senior Trevor Dempsey (3.313 Geology).
Juniors Chris Avery (3.32 Dramatic Arts) and Julien Rugel (3.639 Exercise Science) made their second appearance on the team, while sophomore Manuel Duran (3.912 Engineering) received his first nomination.
The Lady Hurricanes had two athletes make the All-Academic team for a third time, including senior Sholeh Rezaee (3.67 Psychology) and senior Haley West (3.66 Exercise Science). Senior Mercedes Benites (3.949 Political Science) and junior Ella Hawkins (3.35 Management) made their second appearance on the team, while senior Jessica Bingham (3.32 Exercise Science) and sophomore Michelle Gustavsen (4.00 Nursing) received their first nomination.
