AMERICUS — Voters in Americus go to the polls Tuesday to decide on a mayor and whether to allow alcohol package sales on Sunday, while voters in District 5 also have a choice of who represents them.
Incumbent Mayor Barry Blount, a banker, faces opposition from Laura Lee Bernstein, an educator.
Voters in District 5 will decide between incumbent Council member Shirley Green Reese and Kelvin Pless.
On the alcohol question, if it passes it will allow the sale of malt beverages, wine and distilled spirits by retailers between the hours of 12:30 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. on Sundays. The voters of Sumter County approved this question several years ago.
There will be three polling places in Americus open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Election Day, Tuesday: the Sumter County Parks & Recreation Department at Boone Park on Rucker Street, the Rees Park Economic Development Center on Elm Avenue, and the Georgia Southwestern State University Conference Center on South Lee Street.
The City of Andersonville also has a few races in its government. The polling place there is located at the Fire Station/City Hall.
All voters are reminded that they are required to present a photo ID in order to cast their ballot.
According to Robert Brady, Sumter County Elections supervisor, 627 had cast their ballots in early voting in Americus and Andersonville as of 5 p.m. Friday.
