AMERICUS — The South Georgia Technical College (SGTC) cosmetology students provided the residents from the Methodist Home for Children in Americus with a special “spa day” recently at the Sumter County Division of Family and Child Services (DFCS) facility.
The SGTC cosmetology students, who were all in their third semester of the program, offered hair services, manicures, pedicures and facials to seven individuals from the Methodist Home for Children in Americus.
Students Destiny Baker of Ellaville, Scotti Jo Coffee of Cordele, Frances Gill of Parrott, Jenna Gill of Ellaville, and Rachael Johnson of Oglethorpe visited the DFCS facility with adjunct cosmetology lab instructor Elizabeth Lumpkin as a way to give back to the community while gaining experience in their field.
“I could not be more proud of these students who participated in the spa day,” Lumpkin said. “It was such a joy to hear the girls’ conversations while they were getting the royal treatment and seeing how beautiful their nails were.”
After the event ended, Leigh Poole, regional director of the Methodist Home for Children, said that she would love to take the girls from the Methodist Home to SGTC to receive more services in the future.
The SGTC cosmetology program is one year in length and has a 100 percent pass rate for the licensure program.
