Called Meeting: The Sumter County Board of Education holds a called meeting at 6 p.m. Dec. 28 in the board room of the Sumter County Schools’ Administration Building, 100 Learning Lane, Americus to discuss workers’ compensation insurance. The meeting is open to the public.

Education Program: The NAMI Family-to Family Education Program is offered again beginning Jan. 8. The program is offered at no cost to family members and close friends of persons living with mental illness. Developed by the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), the course includes the latest research, resources, support, and coping strategies. Teachers are trained family members of NAMI Albany. The course meets for 12 consecutive Mondays, with two choices of meeting times: 2-4:30 p.m. OR 6-8:30 p.m. Pre-registration is required. Nextdoor: Nextdoor, a free phone and device app, is a great way to stay in the know about what’s going on in our neighborhoods — whether it’s finding a last-minute babysitter, learning about an upcoming event, or hearing about a rash of car break-ins. There are 141,000 “neighborhoods” on Nextdoor, with 14 in the Americus area. Citizens are finding lost pets, alerting others to suspicious activity and becoming closer neighbors through this free site. The website is www.nextdoor.com.

Free Service: Americus Fire & Emergency Services offers free blood pressure checks from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday at Station 1 (South Lee Street).

GriefShare: First Baptist Church offers a non-denominational video series and biblical concepts for healing after the death of a loved one. Led by caring people, participants are provided workbooks for personal study and receive encouragement through small-group discussion. Meetings are from 7-8:30 p.m. the first and third Mondays of each month. There is no cost and the meetings are open to anyone grieving the death of a loved one. Al-Anon: You do not have to be an alcoholic to suffer from the effects of alcoholism. Al-Anon offers a safe place to recover from the effects of another person’s drinking. Meetings are 7-8 p.m. Tuesdays at the AA Clubhouse, Ga. Highway 30. All meetings are confidential and open to interested persons.

GED Testing Hours: GED testing at the McClain Center at South Georgia Technical College is 8 a.m.-noon and 1-5 p.m. Tuesdays and the first Saturday of each month. Free GED classes are available. Call 229-931-7323.

Anonymous Crime Tipline: The Americus Police Department has an anonymous crime tip line 924-4102. Citizens can leave information for police about crime in their neighborhood or other areas. The calls are completely anonymous.

Volunteers Needed: Phoebe Sumter Hospice, a local nonprofit, is looking for volunteers to serve as a member of the hospice team by sharing skills and interests in a manner that provides comfort and enriches the quality of life for those served.
