Furlow Applications: Beginning Jan. 1, Furlow Charter School will be accepting applications from students entering grades 5K-11 for the 2018-19 academic school year. The school is open to all children of Sumter County (based on availability), does not charge tuition, and does not have special entrance requirements. Applications for enrollment are available at the school at 63 Valley Drive in Americus or can be downloaded from the FCS website, www.furlowcharterschool.org.  Applications are available in both English and Spanish and must be completed and turned in by 5 p.m. Feb. 14.

Library Board: The next regular quarterly meeting of the Sumter County Library Board of Trustees is at 6 p.m.  Jan. 2 in the Library meeting room at 307 E Lamar St, Americus, GA 31709. The meeting is open to the public.

Farmers’ Meeting: A Peanut Production Meeting for Sumter County farmers is Jan. 4 at the Sumter County Agricultural Center Auditorium, 127 William Bowen Pointe. Earn one hour credit towards pesticide license. There will be a sponsored meal so please call 924-4476 on Jan. 2 to let us know you plan to attend.

Free Service: Americus Fire & Emergency Services offers free blood pressure checks from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday at Station 1 (South Lee Street).

GriefShare: First Baptist Church offers a non-denominational video series and biblical concepts for healing after the death of a loved one. Led by caring people, participants are provided workbooks for personal study and receive encouragement through small-group discussion. Meetings are from 7-8:30 p.m. the first and third Mondays of each month. There is no cost and the meetings are open to anyone grieving the death of a loved one. Volunteers Needed: SOWEGA Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA), office serving a six-county area, needs volunteers to work with abused and neglected children who are involved in the court system. A CASA volunteer advocates for the child’s best interest before the court. Training classes are available soon. For more information, call 931-4488.

Adult Reading Skills: Adult Literacy Action Inc. has several openings for adult individuals interested in improving their reading skills. The organization is affiliated with the Lake Blackshear Regional Library. Volunteer tutors are available to work with individuals on a one-on-one basis.
