AMERICUS — The Georgia State Patrol has released the completed accident report on a fatal traffic accident that occurred on Dec. 8 on Ga. Highway 49 South at South Village Drive.
The accident occurred at 2:19 p.m. and another fatal wreck occurred about 10 minutes later on U.S. Highway 280 East in Americus. Each accident also had five injuries.
According to the 49 accident report, by Post 10, Americus, a Ford F-150 pickup truck, driven by John A. Hooper, 23, of 210-D Brown St., Americus, and Mitsubishi Outlander SUV, driven by Christopher B. Williams, 44, of 105 S. Village Drive, Americus, were both traveling north on 49. Meanwhile, a Chevrolet K1500 pickup truck, driven by Michael T. Feltman, 58, of 1500 Ga. Highway 308 South, Smithville, was traveling south on 49.
The report states that the Ford truck was traveling behind the SUV, and when the SUV stopped and waited for oncoming traffic before making a turn onto South Village Drive, the Ford truck, which was following too closely, in an attempt not to rear end the SUV, traveled into the southbound lane and struck the Chevrolet truck head on. The Ford also struck the left rear of the SUV.
The Chevrolet truck left the roadway and struck the stop sign at South Village Drive and came to an uncontrolled final rest facing east in the south ditch of South Village Drive. The Ford truck came to an uncontrolled final rest facing southwest in the intersection of 49 and South Village Drive. The SUV came to a final rest on the east shoulder of 49.
Feltman was pronounced dead at the scene.
Charges are pending the completion of the SCRT (Special Crash Reconstruction Team) report.
