AMERICUS – Both the South Georgia Tech men’s and women’s basketball teams rolled to impressive victories over Albany Tech.

The Lady Jets kicked off the double-header with a 66-47 win over the Lady Titans. With the win, the Lady Jets remain at the top of the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Conference (GCAA) standings.

The SGT Men’s Basketball Team followed up with a 101-90 win over the Albany Tech Titans. The Lady Jets are now 19-5 overall and 11-1 in the GCAA. The Jets are 12-8 overall and 5-2 in the GCAA. The Jets are in second place in the conference behind Georgia Highlands.

Despite his team’s win, Athletic Director and SGT Women’s Head Coach James Frey knows there is still much work to be done with his squad. “WE are still struggling. We came back in the fourth quarter and kicked it up a notch, and that was good to see”, Frey said.

Up 30-20 at halftime, the Lady Jets were outscored 14-11 by the Lady Titans in the third quarter. By the time the quarter ended, SGT was only up 41-34.

However, the Lady Jets came on fire in the final period, outscoring the Lady Titans 25-13 to close out the game and earn the 66-47 win.

Freshman forward Ricka Jackson and sophomore forward Houlfat Mahouchiza each scored 14 points to lead the Lady Jets. Jackson two for three from beyond the arc and went four for seven from the field. Jackson also crashed the boards, grabbing seven rebounds and dishing out one assist. Mahouchiza was perfect from the foul line, going 10 for 10. Mahouchiza also did some board work, hauling down five rebounds. She also had two assists and blocked two shots.

However, Jackson and Mahouchiza weren’t the only Lady Jets scoring in double figures. Sophomore forward Esther Adenike scored 13 points to help lead the Lady Jets to victory.

After the women were done, it was time for the men to square off. The game began with a technical foul against the Jets for not having an SGT player listed in the official book. Albany Tech sank the two technical foul shots to start the game.

The first half was an evenly-played affair with the teams tied 43-43 at halftime. However, the second half belonged to the Jets as they ended up winning 101-90.

“We played hard and I was glad to see that type of hustle for the entire game”, SGT Head Coach Travis Garrett said. “We finished the drill and came back with a good conference win.”

Freshman forward Adonis Green led the Jets in scoring with 23 points. The Stockbridge, GA native went three for five from beyond the arc and hit four out of five foul shots. Sophomore guard Dawan Bass was also in double-figures, scoring 20 points. Not to be outdone, sophomore guard Rico Simmons scored 18 points, including shooting a perfect eight for eight from the charity stripe.

The Jets will travel to Barnesville to take on Gordon State College at 4 p.m. on Saturday. The next home game for both teams will be on Wednesday against East Georgia State. The Women’s game tips off at 5:30 p.m., followed by the men’s game at 7:30 p.m.
