AMERICUS — World War II veteran Earl McGrother, age 96, passed away on Thursday evening, Jan. 25, 2018, at Phoebe Sumter Medical Center.

Funeral services with military honors were planned for 11 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 29, from the graveside at Oak Grove Cemetery. The Rev. Ronald Warren and the Rev. David Chapman officiated.

The family will receive friends between the hours of 3 and 5 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 28, at Hancock Funeral Home, 427 S. Lee St., Americus.

Born Aug. 13, 1921, in Clay County, he was a son of the late Henry McGrother and Minnie Melton McGrother.

Mr. McGrother devoted nine years to military service, having entered the service at the age of 16, and serving just before, during, and just after World War II.

He was of the Methodist faith, and was employed as a semi driver for Underwood Trucking, transporting all kinds of freight, particularly light fixtures. At the time of his retirement, he had logged some three million miles, accident free.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Wilma Ophelia Warren McGrother; and by a daughter-in-law, Albena McGrother.

Survivors include his children: David McGrother (Maxine) of Americus, Willie Earl McGrother of Buena Vista, and George McGrother (Barbara) of Andersonville; grandchildren: Joett DeVane of Ranger, Ga., Lynn McGrother of Ellaville, Jason McGrother (Angie) of Andersonville, Wendy Spires of Ellaville, Kerrie Thomas (Chris) of Americus, John Smith of Andersonville, Lee Dovre (Mallory) of Atlanta, Michael Dovre of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Valerie Ackley (Zachary) of Ellaville; 16 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
