Lady Canes fall at Columbus State

COLUMBUS – Despite GSW sophomore guard Mariya Trimble recording her second-straight double-double, the Georgia Southwestern University Women’s Basketball Team struggled against the Lady Cougars and lost 71-51 at Columbus State Wednesday night, February 7.

Trimble scored 15 points and grabbed 15 rebounds against the Lady Cougars.

Amanda Melosky chipped in nine points and grabbed three rebounds for GSW in the losing cause. The Lady Cougars were led in scoring by Tatiana Wayne with 16 points.

With the loss, the Lady Canes fall to 7-13 overall and 4-12 in the Peach Belt Conference. Columbus State improves to 13-7 overall and 11-5 in the PBC.

Turnovers have been a constant problem for the Lady Canes all season. It reared its ugly head again Wednesday night as GSW turned it over 24 times. Those turnovers led to 17 points for the Lady Cougars.

GSW fell behind by 17 points by halftime. This was largely due to poor shooting from the field and turnovers. The Lady Canes shot 6-of-29 (20.7%) in the first half.

GSW was able to get the scoring going in the third quarter. The Lady Canes scored nine of the first 13 points of the quarter to cut into the lead. However, they couldn’t keep up the pace down the stretch. The second half was played fairly evenly, with Columbus State outscoring the Lady Canes 32-30 during the final 20 minutes.

The Lady Cougars outrebounded GSW 52-44 and scored 10 fast-break points. Columbus State also outscored the Lady Canes 34-18 in the paint.

GSW will try to rebound from the loss when they travel to Aiken, South Carolina to take on USC-Aiken. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
