AMERICUS — Bardin Hooks of Americus has announced his candidacy for the District 138 seat in the State House of Representatives.  Hooks’ announcement follows news that Rep. Bill McGowan intends to retire at the end of his current term. McGowan has endorsed Hooks’ bid to succeed him.
“As an Americus native with deep roots in Southwest Georgia, I am well aware of the challenges facing our community and all of rural Georgia,” Hooks said. “I will focus on economic development, healthcare, and improving education. We need to ensure that the growth and prosperity enjoyed by other areas of Georgia do not pass us by. I believe that I can be the strong voice our district needs in the General Assembly.”
Hooks, 37, is a partner in the law firm of Arnold & Hooks, LLC in Americus. He is a graduate of The University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee, and Mercer University School of Law in Macon. He began his legal career as an Assistant Attorney General for the State of Georgia before entering private practice.
“I am blessed to have the support of my wife, family, and friends, and I have begun fielding a strong campaign team to help guide me at both the state and local level. In addition to Rep. McGowan, I would like to thank the many others throughout District 138 who have already offered their support and encouragement.”
Hooks was born and raised in Americus, and his family has lived in Sumter County for eight generations. He is the son of former state Sen. George Hooks and the late Gail Hooks of Americus. He is married to Hayden Headley Hooks, an attorney who specializes in public education law. Bardin and Hayden are the proud parents of a son, George, born October 2017.
“Having grown up with a father who was first elected to the State House the same year I was born, I am fully aware of the time, effort, and sacrifice that is required to be an effective legislator. Despite the challenges, I am dedicated to public service, and I am committed to working hard on behalf of our community and region.”
Hooks has been an active member of the local community throughout his life. He is an Eagle Scout with Troop 21 in Americus, a member of the Americus Rotary Club, a board member of the Americus Housing Authority, and a past member of the Americus-Sumter County Hospital Authority. Hooks and his family are members of Calvary Episcopal Church in Americus, where he serves as a lay minister and member of the vestry.
“I will work hard to serve all the citizens of this district with integrity and diligence,” he said. “I will be a state representative you can depend on and be proud of.”
