Sumter County All-Star Basketball Teams excel in state tournaments

AMERICUS – All of the Sumter County All-Star Basketball Teams advanced to the semifinals of their respective state tournaments Friday and Saturday, March 2-3.  One team, the 10U Boys, advanced to the state championship at their tournament in Carrollton, but were defeated by Thomaston-Upson County by nine points.

The 12U Boys, who went to Murray County for their state tournament, made it to the final four before being eliminated by Baldwin County. “We were down by as much as 26 points and we were able to cut the deficit to six,” 12U Boys Head Coach Dwight Harris said. “We ended up losing by nine.”

The 12U Girls went to Bremen for their state tournament, and made it all the way to the semifinals before being eliminated by Liberty County. The 8U Boys, who went to Effingham County for their state tournament, also made it all the way to the state semifinals before being eliminated.

Dwight Harris heads up the youth basketball program at SCPRD. “I’m really proud of all the teams and how well they did in the state tournaments,” Harris said. “The teams and the parents did a great job of representing Sumter County.”
