GSW Softball loses doubleheader to Columbus State

AMERICUS – The Lady Hurricanes Softball Team took it on the chin Friday, March 9, as the Lady Cougars of Columbus State came into Americus and swept GSW in a doubleheader 15-0 and 9-5. It was the Peach Belt Conference home opener for the Lady Hurricanes.

In Game 1, the Lady Cougars took control early, scoring four runs in the first, six in the second, two in the third and three in the fourth to run rule GSW in a 15-0 route. The Lady Cougars scored 15 runs on 14 hits and committed no errors. GSW was shut out. They were only able to collect four hits and they committed one error.

Freshman Lauren Kuerzi went 2 for 2 at the palte. The other two hits came from Hayley Tierce and Brittany Childs.

Game 2 for the Lady Hurricanes was a much more respectable affair, but the result was the same. They fell in game two by the score of 9-5. Columbus State started hot at the plate once again. They scored three runs in the first two innings to take an early lead. However, GSW was able to answer in the bottom of the second inning. Trailing CSU 3-0, the Lady Hurricanes began to mount a comeback. Lauren Kuerzi led off the inning with a walk. Then Elizabeth Wills and Allee Denney both singled to load the bases. Later in the inning, Chloe Zoeller singled, driving in two runs. Mikela Barlow and Ansley Dean followed with back-to-back doubles to give GSW their first lead of the day at 5-3.

They were able to maintain the lead until the top of the fifth inning. The Lady Cougars scored four runs in the top of the fifth to take a 7-5 lead. They added two more insurance runs in the seventh to take Game 2 by the score of 9-5.

Zoeller and Barlow drove in two RBIs for GSW and five different players recorded a hit.

After winning eight straight games, the Lady Hurricanes have now gone 1-6.

They will try to get back to their winning ways when they step out of conference by hosting Valdosta State on Tuesday, March 13 in a doubleheader. The first game begins at 3 p.m., followed by Game 2 at 5 p.m. GSW is currently 10-11 overall and 0-2 in the Peach Belt Conference.
