AMERICUS — Memorial services for Mrs. Harriett Wilson Peak of Americus, Ga., who passed on Tuesday, March 6, 2018, in the Taylor County Health & Rehab Center, Butler, Ga., will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 18, 2018, at First United Methodist Church. The Rev. Dr. Jerry Roe and the Rev. Bill Dupree will officiate. In lieu of flowers the family request donations be made to the Sumter Historic Trust.

Harriett Wilson Peak was born on Nov. 24, 1939, in Tucson, Arizona, to the parentage of the late Mr. James Davis Wilson, and the late Harriett and Cordes Oetjen. Miss Harriett, as she was known, was an extraordinary member of her community. She was (take a breath) president of the Southland Academy PTA, the Junior Service League, the Sumter Historic Trust, the D.A.R., and the Junior Women’s Club of Columbus, where she began her extensive philanthropy. Also in Columbus, she served as vice-president of the Columbus Jaycettes, the Official Chaperone for Miss Georgia pageant, and she was named an Outstanding Young Woman in America, in addition to her dedication to St. Luke’s Methodist Church.

In Americus, at First United Methodist Church for over 20 years, she served as a choir mother, circle leader, and as vice-president of the United Methodist Women. In addition to her church activities, she was also active in the Newcomer’s Club, and her beloved Hat & Hoe Garden Club. During the 1970s, she campaigned heavily as member of the Peanut Brigade for President and Mrs. Jimmy Carter. In 1983, she was named a Gracious Lady of Georgia. And recently, from 1975 to 2015, Miss Harriett taught over 1,000 kids to learn how to swim, and transformed award-winning swimmers into extraordinary human beings.

Miss Harriett is survived by: her husband, John David Peak of Plains, Ga.; her children: Elizabeth Brooks Nettum, and Richard Nettum, Sally Peak Lanier, and Wilson Cordes Peak, all of Americus, Ga.; her grandchildren, Dr. Lee Everett, and Stephanie Everett of Indianapolis, Nathaniel Wilson Peak, Moylan (Claire) Freedman and Chris Freedman, all of Atlanta, Ga., Virginia Brooks Lanier of Americus, Ga., and a sister, Sally Wilson Beard, of Conroe, Texas. Miss Harriett has many nieces and nephews, her treasured friend, Theresa Myers, and a cherished brother-in-law, Fred Peak. Her son, John Wilson Peak, precedes her in death.
