Lady Hurricanes Tennis dominates Fort Valley State

Fort Valley, GA – The Georgia Southwestern State University Women’s Tennis Team dominated Fort Valley State 8-1 on Sunday, March 18, at Fort Valley State.

Seville, Spain native Celia del Castillo, GSW’s number one singles player, made short work of FVSU’s Kariah Kelly 6-1, 6-0. Maria Toboada of GSW defeated Tynecia Smith 6-0, 6-2. The only loss of the day came when FVSU’s Brishon Bridges defeated Kendall Crew in a hard-fought match 6-4, 7-6. Anneliese Leahy of GSW defeated Cori Griffith in straight sets 6-0, 6-0. Both Ashley Denby and Alexandria Rhodes of GSW won their matches by default.

In doubles action, the GSW team of Celia del Castillo/Maria Toboada defeated Kariah Kelly/Tynecia Smith 8-2. Anneliese Leahy/Ashley Denby defeated the FVSU duo of Brishon Bridges/Cori Griffith 8-0. The GSW doubles team of Alexandria Rhodes/Kendall Crew won their match by default.

Just as it was for the GSW Men’s Team, it was a refreshing victory for the Women’s team as well. The Lady Hurricanes were coming off Peach Belt Conference losses against Georgia College on Saturday, March 3, and to Columbus State on Sunday, March 4. They were shut out in both matches 9-0.

The Lady Hurricanes will step back into Peach Belt Conference play when they travel to St. Augustine, Florida on Saturday, March 24, to take on Flagler College. The match begins at 10 a.m. The Lady Hurricanes are 7-9 overall, and are still looking for the first PBC win of the season at 0-4.
